I booked 36 hours in advance to go to Panama City. It was $350 round trip from Chicago... so as a place to go, pretty affordable, more so if you do the hostel route and you can speak some Spanish. Panama is supposed to be much more tourist friendly to a degree than say Costa Rica which is supposed to be much more expensive.
